After a blistering winter when all hope seemed lost, the polycultural veggie herb box outside on the fire escape of our apartment lives on! I've decided to give our box a name, "El Veo," since it says, "Veo Grande" on the box. While most of the main herbs we transplanted did not make it (rosemary, basil, lavender), either because it was an annual (basil), but mostly because of the inhospitable winter, the chives (which were delicious in our pasta sauce last night), lettuce and carrots are sprouting!! We had sprinkled some lettuce and carrot seeds around the herbs last summer, and only a few lettuce leaves along with one puny carrot was harvested. Now, all of the sudden they are popping up! I'm not sure I understand why they didn't sprout then but are sprouting now. I was pretty sure we had to start over this season, but the resiliency of nature continues to astonish me. Perhaps, they just needed time to grow, like we all do.
